Chapter 19
“Alana, you’re so beautiful.” He pulled me into his arms against his chest.
I rested my head briefly against his shoulder as I felt his chest rise with every breath he took.
In the chill of the morning air, he tightened his arms around me. I let my head settle on his shoulder again. I wanted that moment to last an eternity. Nothing needed to be said, nothing needed to be explained. I just wanted to savor his warmth, the sound of his breath as it trailed along the skin of my cheek, and the touch of his fingers that stroked through my hair.
My heart slammed against my chest as I fought the drive to tip my head up toward him and meet his lips with mine. I wanted to be in control, but at the same time, I didn’t. I wanted to be able to let go, to be as free as the wind that blew lightly across the roof.
Maybe it didn’t have to matter that he was involved in anything. Maybe I didn’t have to care.
“Lala,” he whispered as his palm cupped my chin.
I looked up at him in the same moment that he looked down at me, and our lips collided. To say who kissed whom would be impossible. It was as if in the same instant neither of us could continue to resist.
The sweet soft kiss barely lasted a few seconds before Mick pulled back and looked into my eyes.
“No matter what we face, I think we can handle it if we’re together.”
“Me too.” I pulled him back toward me for another kiss.
As I lost myself in it, his arms wrapped around me and the world around us began to light up. Even as the sun climbed higher in the sky, I continued to kiss him. Logically, I knew that our magical moment had to come to an end, but I pushed the thought away. I wanted it to last as long as it possibly could.
Mick pulled away again, this time breathless, as he looked at me. “I’m sorry.”
“You have nothing to be sorry for.” I smiled as I met his eyes.
“I’m sorry because we have to go.” He clasped my hands with his own. “It’s daylight now and the security guard will be riding through here. If he spots us, he’ll figure out that we’ve been using this place as a hideout. We can’t let that happen.”
“No, we can’t.” My heart dropped at the thought.
“I wish we could stay here forever.” He inched close to me and met my lips again.
I pressed my hand against his chest as I returned the kiss, then reluctantly broke it.
“You’re right, we have to go.” I touched his cheek and smiled as I studied the glow in his eyes.
“But I don’t want to walk away from you.”
“You don’t have to.” I squeezed the hand I still held. “Mick, we might have to be apart for a little while, but not for long.”
“I’ll see you at lunch?” He leaned close, as if he might kiss me again, but ducked away as we both heard an engine in the distance.
